RTBF Culture reports that Mons will be at the centre of events planned in the Hainaut region for the centenary period from 2014. The author highlights that even the British government is making the town a priority in its plans to commemorate the historic event.

This is largely due to Mons' significance to the British, as this is where their soldiers met Germans on the battlefield for the first and last time during the conflict.
