The Daily Mail has reported that a "senior Whitehall official" has criticised the UK Culture Secretary as concerns were raised that Britain was going to "downplay" Australia's role in the First World War.

The comments came in light of Australian concerns that the UK would favour commemorating the "New Commonwealth" during the Centenary, instead of Australia.

The Daily Mail's source reportedly said: "This is awful - the idiot Maria Miller is doing nothing to involve the rest of the Empire, who sent vast numbers of people to help us".
