'Faces of War' Article

In this article published in Smithsonian Magazine, Caroline Alexander charts the story of the attempt by pioneering surgeons - with the collaboration of artists - to reconstruct soldiers' faces that had been deformed during WW1. Some of these surgeons created techniques that have evolved into the plastic surgery we know today.
